Welcome to the University of Sheffield’s beginner-friendly, project-based space society.

We’re a student-led community passionate about space, technology, and engineering open to everyone, whether you’re just starting out or already deep into rockets, engineering, and astronomy.

Our society is all about learning by doing. Through hands-on, project-based work and regular workshops, you’ll pick up practical skills, collaborate on real student-led missions, and build a foundation to take part in national competitions like UKSEDS.

Expect expert guest talks, networking events, socials, and a welcoming environment where curiosity counts more than experience. By the end of the year, you’ll have new skills, a certificate to celebrate your journey, and a group of friends who are just as excited about space as you are.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I find the Discord/Whatsapp link?

Our social media links are listed at the footer of the website, in the Instagram bio, or on the SU membership page. The Discord is exclusive to members, whereas the WhatsApp group chat is an open community for anyone interested.

Can I join SSI at any time of the year?

Absolutely! We host activities and events throughout the year. Entries such as UKSEDS competitions have a timeline and deadlines, which require you to join a team at the start of the term. You can still build rockets, work on projects, and participate in other SSI activities whenever you join.

When is the next SSI session?

Our scheduling depends on the comfort of the majority of our members. We will provide you with a timeline of our sessions and update you on any changes that occur as we go along.

Is SSI a co-curricular activity?

Not exactly. We are a society affiliated with the Students Union, that empowers you to learn and equips you with the tools you need to get into CCAs, all the while providing you with a community of space enthusiasts.
